About Chicken Scratchin
Lynus & Debbie Sevigny attended their first Wing Ding in Knoxville in 1985. Lynus had decided to have a mural painted on their Wing, but found himself spellbound while standing in the midst of the artists in the pinstriping booth area. He admired their work, especially a man etching windshields, but decided, “I can do that!” After returning home to North Dakota, he began to give serious thought to pursuing this art form as a career. He relates, “I had taken several art classes in college and I always liked to draw, even as a youngster.” One day he was drawing a picture and his grandmother said, “That’s just a bunch of chicken scratchin.” Lynus always fondly remembered this comment and named his business in honor of the well-intentioned insult.

Lynus says, “When I pinstripe a bike for a customer, I like to show them what it will look like. I usually paint a saddlebag cover or the side of the trunk with the colors I like. In most cases the customer will choose what I have shown them.”For Lynus, pinstriping goes far beyond several intertwining lines. His style involves a scroll-like richness and intricacy that requires careful scrutiny. The effect is mesmerizing the viewer tries to figure out the pattern and how Lynus adapted it to the various size panels of the bike. Born and raised in North Dakota, Lynus frequently incorporates Indian feathers, dreamcatchers and even bison skulls into his designs. The scrolled design and realistic images are often connected with what looks like elaborate Indian beading.
